Many people in Uganda lack one of the most basic fundamental needs: good quality medical care. Unsanitary conditions are common and can lead to serious diseases such as Malaria, HIV / AIDS, Tubercluosis, Yellow Fever, Typhoid, Cholera, diarrheal diseases and Ebola. According to the World Health Organization, communicable diseases comprise more than 50% of Uganda’s morbidity and mortality rates. With no reliable local medical facility, Ugandans must travel long distances to the nearest hospital or consult pseudo-medical experts who use alternative medical practices such as witchcraft. Rampant diseases, unsanitary conditions and the lack of proper medical care have produced many orphans in the Nyamuhan village. To address these issues, The Bugumiro Foundation has established a medical clinic to serve the community.
The Bugumiro Foundation erected a temporary medical clinic and pharmacy to provide affordable comprehensive healthcare to more than 175 local children and adults. The staff at the medical facility recognize Christ as the ultimate healer and provide holistic healthcare for each patient. In addition to these services, The Bugumiro Foundation has partnered with local non-profits and international missionaries to provide additional medical services for the Nyamuhan community. Approximately twice a year, the Foundation collaborates with a Ugandan non-profit called Hope Smiles to run a weeklong dental clinic onsite. In August 2022, the first dental camp administered first-time dental treatments to 320 patients. Treatments included professional teeth cleanings, tooth restorations, a root canal and tooth extractions.
Along with dental services, The Bugumiro Foundation has hosted qualified medical professionals from local cities as well as other countries. The Nyamuha village is so remote that many government programs do not reach the local population. The village relies heavily on traveling medical professionals for more complex health care. Medical missions bring door-to-door medical care, general health assessments and medical camps (surgical or dental) for those in the community.
As The Bugumiro Foundation continues to serve the local Nyamuhan community, many Ugandans still lack basic healthcare services. With the nearest hospital 3 hours away, medical care is hard to obtain in the remote village of Nyamua. Through strategic planning and the generous support of benefactors, the Foundation has developed plans to build a hospital to support the local community.
