According to the International Monetary Fund World Economic Outlook, Uganda is among the 25 poorest countries in the world (measured in GDP-PPP terms). Most Ugandans survive on less than $1 per day. Larger cities such as Kampala, Fort Portal and Jinja provide more opportunities for commerce, industrialization and education. Smaller villages like Nyamuha lack resources, jobs and economic stability. Mechanics have no cars to repair. Secretaries can’t support such small businesses. Trained medical professionals lack safe sanitary facilities and adequate supplies, leaving locals to seek out controversial medical treatments derived from pagan ancestral worship rites. These economic issues jeopardize the stability of the family unit in Ugandan society. Impoverished conditions have inspired The Bugumiro Foundation to restore a healthy community and rehabilitate families with several economic initiatives.
The Bugumiro Foundation recognizes the lack of economic opportunities in the Nyamuhan community and develops opportunities to stimulate the local economy. These opportunities include zero interest loans, financial literacy training and livestock farming opportunities. Nyamuha is a very competitive and highly saturated agricultural economy. Farming barely produces sustainable profits due to high costs of seed, fertilizer and pesticides. Excessive farming has impacted the quality of the soil and yielded fewer crops. To address these challenges, The Bugumiro Foundation partners with local entrepreneurial businessmen and women to provide financial support and business management resources.
Local entrepreneurs are seeking alternative opportunities to build successful businesses. However, many residents have no financial planning or business management skills. Business owners will spend the majority of the money they earn leaving no opportunity for long-term strategic business planning. With the support of The Bugumiro Foundation, qualified reputable entrepreneurs can access financial literacy training, budgeting, personal finance resources and strategic planning guidance. Formal business education is transforming families and the local economy. New business opportunities, such as livestock start-ups, are growing and strengthening the community. The Bugumiro Foundation identifies responsible families in need and provides basic necessary resources – one goat or five chickens - to start livestock breeding business. These businesses provide hope and new opportunities for families and support the local agrarian society.
With additional support, these economic development programs have the power to radically transform the Nyamuhan community and strengthen the cornerstone of society: the family unit. Parents are struggling to provide – financially and emotionally - for their children due to the lack of opportunities in the local economy. Residents with college degrees and technical training live in mud huts and can barely feed their families because they don’t have work. Some parents who can’t provide for their children collapse under the pressure and fall into alcoholism and domestic abuse. Many families are forced to seek employment in neighboring towns or larger cities, which leads to employee retention issues in Nyamuha.
The Bugumiro Foundation continues to identify new development programs to stimulate the local economy. There are several new initiatives to sponsor trained medical professionals and teachers in Nyamuha. As critical members of society, teachers and medical professionals will be given the opportunity for occupational training and formation. The Bugumiro Foundation is also raising funds to build a new medical facility and expand the local school to provide adequate and affordable healthcare and education to local residents. The larger school and new medical clinic and pharmacy will provide more job opportunities for the Nyamuhan community. As these programs develop and the school expands, The Bugumiro Foundation has grown alongside. The mission has added several members to the team and is looking to hire additional administrative employees to support the foundation.
As a non-profit Catholic organization, The Bugumiro Foundation continues to live out its mission: to bring the hope and healing of Jesus Christ to the marginalized families in Uganda through education and empowerment programs. Please consider supporting the foundation in its mission to serve the Ugandan community.
